The Simple Ways Leaders Can Help Working Parents Amid the Pandemic

Parents are unsung heroes – they can find a way to solve things even when faced with the most difficult circumstances. However, that doesn’t mean that they are taking a walk in the park as they juggle the responsibilities of being an employee and a doting mom or dad.

Caring and appreciative leaders and bosses could give parent employees support during this dire time. That is, if supervisors want to retain them in the company, here are effective ways to help them:

Flexible Time

Most moms and dads have also taken on the role of a teacher. As school structure remains untraditional, they must carry the burden of making sure their kids still learn despite being at the confines of their homes.

As a boss, you can offer a flexible schedule for parent workers – this way, you are helping struggling mothers and fathers keep up with their children’s school requirements while still able to perform well at work.

Appreciation and Reward

This rule transcends beyond working parents as ALL types of employees can benefit from this strategy. As a boss, you want to make an impact on your constituents and one simple and nice way to do this is to acknowledge and appreciate everyone who has done a good job. It wouldn’t hurt to celebrate your employees’ accomplishments – plus, this is actually a subtle way to encourage excellent work.

Moreover, you can also underscore and recognize working parents’ feats outside work – this may include praising those who have successfully transitioned their kids’ education to homeschooling or someone who has taken paternity leave.

Support Groups

You can show your care for working parents by establishing support groups and providing resources. Making these things available will help struggling moms and dads journey through the tough times and, at the same time, strengthen them and other employees as well.

People who find other employees mirroring their predicaments are likely to stay in the company for the long haul.

Role Model

As a boss, your employees, including working parents, look up to you, which is why you need to be a positive example. This is said to be one of the most effective ways of making your workers stay in the company.

Be an ideal model by applying the company’s policies at work – this gives them a hint that you’re not exempted from the rules. You can also set a positive example because employees tend to copy their boss’ actions. For instance, if you got back to work a day after your wife gave birth, it’s a behavior that sets off a negative impression.

Workplace Policies

Be sure that workplace policies are completely stated in a written memo, which helps your employees know the resources available when they need it.
